Illinois recently introduced state licensed Massage Therapy. Qualifications to
become licensed are met in a number of ways. One is by passing the National Certification
Exam of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and maintaining current certification.
Another way is to be an active member of a national professional massage therapy
organization for at least a year. Experienced Illinois Massage Therapists who
meet either of these criteria are automatically illegible to be licensed through
"grandfathering." Therapists listed on this site prior to their being
formally licensed fulfill these Illinois state requirements to legally practice
Massage Therapy. Only
therapists regulated by the state may use the terms "massage," "massage
therapy" and "massage therapist" to promote their services. Unregulated
specialists in Reiki, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, Therapeutic Touch, Reflexology
are prohibited from publicly describing their services as "massage,"
or "massage therapy" or themselves as "massage therapists." |
